Elisei's Story: From Shoe Factory to Fishing Vessel Job in Ireland

Elisei is 22 years old and instead of ending up on a construction site, he chose the money from the fishing industry. He started from the bottom at a processing plant in Norway, and now he's already at the airport, ready to leave for Ireland for his first direct contract on a fishing vessel. Question: 1. For those who don't know you, tell us a few words about yourself. Who is Elisei and what was your life like before you left Romania?

2. If we go back a year, where were you working and how did you see your future then?

3. Did you ever think you would end up working in the fishing industry?

Answer: "To start with, my name is Elisei Patraucean, I'm 22 years old and I'm from northern Romania, specifically Suceava. A year ago, I was working at my brother-in-law's leather shoe company. I didn't like the type of work and I knew that in the future I needed to change something to succeed in life, but I never imagined a future in the fishing industry. I most likely thought I would end up working in construction like most of my brothers."

BEGINNING OF THE CHANGE

Question: 4. How did you discover the AlexFisherWay project and what made you give it a chance?

5. What did you learn from the free lessons and what information completely changed your perspective?

Answer: "The first time I heard about the AlexFisherWay project was last October from a friend who sent me a TikTok video. I was captivated by the idea of working at sea and started studying all the free information, and the thought that I only needed two documents to work at sea made me immediately look for how I could obtain them as quickly as possible."

Question: 6. How did you make the final decision to apply for a job in Norway?

7. Did you have moments when you wanted to give up before leaving? What made you keep going?

Answer: "After I obtained the documents, I started massively applying to fishing companies in Norway because I had worked in Norway before and already had the basic documents. After some time of trying and applying without any response, I began to believe that only people who already had someone in the industry worked there, but I still hadn't paid for the AlexFisherWay course. At one point, I decided to give the course a chance and paid for it, and about 5 days later, I received a response from Alex that workers were needed at a fish processing plant in Norway! I gladly accepted the offer and left immediately."

9. How was your first day in Norway? What surprised you the most?

Answer: "The first day of work was easy; everyone was attentive and kind to me. I found exceptional and helpful people who taught and showed me everything I needed to do."

Question: 11. What did you learn about working in Norway that you can't see from internet videos?

12. What was the hardest period during your time at the factory?

Answer: "The hardest period at the factory was when I was moved to several processing sectors due to a lack of workers, but I always had someone to show me and teach me the necessary things."

Question: 13. But the moment when you felt you made the right choice?

Answer: "I realized I made the right choice when I received my first salary and saw the easy work schedule that is in Norway!

THE ROAD TO THE FIRST VESSEL

Question: 14. At what point did you start thinking that the next step could be a fishing vessel?

15. Why did you choose to take this step, even though you knew it was a much more difficult field?

Answer: "After I gained more experience in fish processing and started to understand the industry, I began to look more into a job on a fishing vessel, even though I knew it was much more difficult than working on land, but also more money, and that was my interest from the start, a job on a vessel!"

Question: 16. How did you find the opportunity in Ireland?

17. How long did it take to get a response and what did you feel when you found out you were accepted?

Answer: "With Alex's help, who applied on my behalf to companies in Ireland, I eventually received confirmation that I got a job on a fishing vessel. The process took about 3 weeks."

Question: 18. At this moment, you are in the airport and about to leave for your first contract at sea. What is the first thought that crosses your mind?

19. What emotions do you have now: excitement, fear, curiosity?

Answer: "As I write this, I'm at the airport heading to Dublin, and honestly, I'm a little nervous. I know it won't be easy, but I trust myself that everything will be fine."

Question: 20. Do you already know which vessel you'll be working on, or will you find out after you arrive?

Answer: "I've already been in contact with the manager in Ireland, and he gave me information about the vessel, the type of fishing, and other useful information."

Question: 21. What do you think will be the biggest challenge for you?

22. What are your expectations from this first experience?

Answer: "Honestly, as it's my first time at sea, I expect it to be challenging and demanding, but I know everything will be fine in the end!"

Question: 23. How did your parents and close ones react when you told them you were going to sea?

Answer: "My family reacted like a family that never had anyone set foot on a vessel. They all advised me to give up and choose a safer path... a job in construction because that's what's in demand, not sailors :)."

Question: 24. Who supported you the most during this period?

Answer: "During this time, I didn't have many supporters except for the hope of a big salary and a better life!"

Question: 25. Is there anyone you feel you owe this important step in your life to?

Answer: "I have to admit that thanks to my friend who sent me the video with AlexFisherWay, I was motivated and given this direction, and I got this far, even though he didn't follow this path due to worries and lack of support from his family."

Question: 28. What do you think would have been different if you had tried to make this journey on your own?

Answer: "If I had made this journey alone, I'm not sure I would have even been able to find the job at the factory, and regarding the job on the vessel... I would have given up long ago."

31. What advice would you give to someone who is watching this interview today and is still hesitating?

Answer: "In life, we make many good and not-so-good decisions regarding work. You should never be afraid to start in such a large and well-paid industry. No one reaches high salaries or good positions without some years of experience, so the sooner you start, the further you'll go ;)!"

Question: 30. What are the biggest myths about working in this industry that you discovered after you got there?

Answer: "You can never truly know something until you experience it firsthand. There are myths that in Norway you must have experience or that the Scandinavian language is mandatory, but in reality, I met people who didn't even speak English, so if there's a will and perseverance, anything is possible. It's normal for a person to have concerns but not too exaggerated. It happened to me to stress a lot over a situation that, after overcoming it, made me laugh, and I concluded that we worry ten times more than we should!"

Answer: "My target is that not long after being in the industry, I will secure a job on a Norwegian vessel with a stable and good contract!"

Answer: "Success means moving forward even if there's no one to support or encourage you, confidence in yourself, and a strong will! Simply giving up along the way to your dream makes it not become a reality!"
