Alexei Matcovschii on types of fishing vessels: from purse seiners to trawlers

There are many types of production vessels in the offshore industry, each designed for specific fishing tasks and conditions. Understanding the differences between them helps in selecting the best vessel for a particular purpose. Trawlers Trawlers are vessels equipped with trawls (special nets) designed to catch fish and other marine life. They are available in several types: -Fishing trawlers: exclusively fish, transferring catches to processing vessels or land-based facilities. Fishing and processing trawlers: equipped to process catches directly on board, including freezing, cutting, and packaging products. Large fishing trawlers can perform a complete processing cycle, producing ready-for-sale products. Seiners Purse seiners specialize in purse seine fishing. This method is effective for pelagic species such as herring and mackerel. Purse seine fishing vessels are equipped with powerful winches and gear for quickly hauling nets, allowing them to handle large volumes of catch rapidly. Drift Nets Drift nets are designed to catch fish using freely floating nets in the water. This method allows you to catch fish moving in the water column. Drift nets are usually small and are used for fishing in coastal areas. Tuna Fishing Vessels These vessels specialize in catching tuna and other large pelagic fish. Depending on the gear used, tuna fishing vessels are divided into: -Recreational boats: use rods and spinning rods for individual tuna fishing. -Longline vessels: use long lines with multiple hooks, allowing the capture of a large number of fish at the same time. They are equipped with gear for setting and retrieving traps, as well as for storing and processing the catch. Depending on the equipment, crab fishing vessels can transport live crabs or perform initial processing and freezing on board. Whaling Ships Historically, whaling ships were used to hunt whales. They were equipped with harpoon guns and gear for processing whale meat and oil. Currently, commercial whaling is banned in many countries, and the use of these vessels has significantly decreased. Each of these types of vessels plays an important role in the offshore extraction industry, providing an efficient and specialized approach to fishing for a variety of marine resources.
